Geoff Willis wins fourth state championships In some of the most difficult wind conditions experienced for some time in Sydney, local rifle club member, Geoff Willis, won his fourth state title with the championships being held on Malabar rifle range last weekend. His previous three titles have been in the F Class Standard category, which allows for shooting off a heavy rest, but this time Geoff elected to compete in F Class Target Rifle, in which only a light bipod is allowed. Competition was held over three days and nine matches from 500m to 800m. The maximum value “6 ring” measures 125mm at 500m and 250mm at 800m. Wind conditions were constantly changing and at times completely switched sides. The first day started in rain to also add to the difficulty. Geoff jumped straight to the lead, shooting a magnificent 207.17 from a possible 210 points. Jeff Eppleston, also from Bathurst, was only 2 points behind, on 205.13 and in fourth place.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 4th December 2018 Hanson Corporate Xmas Shoot Corporate day on the Mound Hanson Concrete recently staged a corporate team building day for plant and quarry managers from across the central west. Bathurst Rifle Club hosted the event with participants travelling from as far away as Temora, Dubbo and east to Katoomba. The day involved an informal competition with two stages of eight shots being fired from 500yds. For most competitors this would be the first time that they had fired a high powered rifle or been on a rifle range. However, with Bathurst’s international team members, Geoff Willis and Jeff Eppleston on hand as coaches, everyone was able to achieve creditable scores and enjoy the day. In fact there proved to be only a ten point spread of scores over the day, and this also kept the focus on the next competitor and his or her efforts.

The return of William Cutler

Posted in General Shooting News on Mar 13, 2018

This week’s image is from a photographer who climbed on to the roof of the Bathurst Council Chambers and Town Hall in William Street in 1907. The spot was a good vantage point to record the return of William Cutler, known locally as Billy, in November that year. Originally, William Cutler was to have arrived home the day before the British Rifle Team, but he arrived the following day with the British men. W.H. Gartrell’s bakery establishment in William Street baked a cake which he displayed in his front window that attracted a good deal of attention. On the top, there was a photograph of William Cutler. Underneath, the words “Proud of the World’s Best” were worked into the icing. Mr Gartrell gave the cake to the committee to be given to the winners of the kangaroo and hare drive at Rock Forest.

He has previously won Queen's Prize meetings in both Sydney and Canberra, but on those occasions Jeff shot in the F Class Standard competition, which allowed him to use a much heavier and more stable pedestal rest.
