Bathurst Rifle Club Inc., 2nd January 2021, L Williams Cup 500 yards.

Saturday saw the start of the L Williams Cup which was planned to start from 300 yards then move back to 500 yards for the second round but due to threatening wet weather and a storm that came through just prior to starting competition it was decided to start at 500 yards as it was also a Club Championship round and with weather permitting then shoot the 300 yards round. After completion of the 500 yards shoot it was then decided to shoot the first round of the L Williams Cup at 500 yards also, due to the time and weather constraints. A very slight and predominately south easterly breeze gave some mostly improved shooting conditions to what has been encountered recently allowing most shooters to score very near or above their handicap.

The first 500 yards for the L Williams Cup and Championship round in Target Rifle Class saw Graeme Bright finish with a second stage possible to be just three centre bulls ahead of Steve Williams with John Coghill having a great day finishing just one point further down and one point ahead of Gordon Shepherd. Next down the list with consistent scoring was Ron Gibson who lost just one extra point each stage to finish two more points ahead of Dennis Lavelle who needed a few shots to settle in shooting Optical Class for the day.

F Class shooters also enjoyed some good scores for the day none more than Geoff Willis with a double possible to stay only two points ahead of three shooters who were only separated by a few super centres with Col Howell in front with eleven super centres after a second stage possible score to finish three super centres ahead of Jeff Eppleston and then Phil Mahon who both dropped only one point each stage. Graham Willis was in the pack early on but failed to capitalise with his second stage and finished three points away and two points ahead of Nick Webster returning after a few weeks break who picked up points in the second stage but could not catch up.

The second 500 yards for the L Williams Cup saw Target Rifle shooter Steve Williams claim a possible in the first stage to stay in the lead with Graeme Bright close behind dropping only one point each stage while claiming twelve centre bulls. John Coghill again scoring consistently to finish two points further down and two points ahead of a slow starting Gordon Shepherd who managed ten straight bulls’ eyes in his second stage but was too far behind to catch the leaders. Ron Gibson had trouble holding his vertical during the first stage and even with the much improved grouping during his second stage could not make up the lost points. Dennis Lavelle retired after his first stage due to some inconsistencies with ammunition.

Col Howell gained top spot in F Class with another impressive possible to finish his second stage after losing only one point early on to finish one point ahead of a consistent scoring Graham Willis. Phil Mahon also improved with his second stage to finish a further two points down with a one point lead over Jeff Eppleston who seemed to get caught in a tricky patch later on. Nick Webster again had a slow start in his first stage and some improvement for his second to be another three points down with Geoff Willis trailing by another four points after switching to an older rifle and finding it was not up to the task.

Next week will be the third round of the L Williams Cup at 600 yards followed by another round of the Treasurers Trophy.
