Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 8th December 2018, Diggers and G James Cups (Round two), 300yards

It’s only eight days into summer and the heat has already arrived making the conditions on the mound on Saturday very uncomfortable. Fortunately there was little wind and surprisingly not a lot of mirage to think about as the flags displayed no interest in moving away from the flag poles.

The target rifle group sprang a surprise with B graders Dennis Lavelle and John Coghill setting the standard, dropping just the one point each in their first stages. Gordon Shepherd still running his new barrel in had a 48.02, Steve Williams dropped his last two shots for a 46.02 and Graeme Bright querying his wind settings jagged a magpie three in his 45.03.

Lavelle was confused by a cross shot on his target in the second stage and took a couple of shots to refocus before completing a day defining 47.02. Coghill changed his front ring size and his group blew apart with a 45.0 score before Bright got it all together with a magnificent 50.07. Williams could do no better than his first stage and Shepherd must have kicked the dog as his score disintegrated to a lowly 41.01, leaving Lavelle to scoop the pool in the days' results.

There were new shooters in F class, some returning juniors, an irregular visitor from Junee (Mike Halloran) and a number of spectators interested in trying the sport, on a very busy day on the mound and beyond for shooters and their ilk.

Jeff Eppleston showed them all what could be achieved by an Australian team representative with a fine display of accuracy, carding 119.8/120. The ever improving Colin Howell put his name forward with 116.7/120 to nip the challenges of Geoff Willis 115.3 and Grahame Willis 114.7 whilst Phil Mahon shot his best round to date, a 110.6/120

Ex military man Angus Ogilvie took up the long arm for the first time in a long while and relished the experience with a 105.3 score whilst the Willis siblings Hayden Hodges 105.3 and Isaac Bowers 96.3 returned for another nibble at target shooting.  Another new shooter, Tom Prichard, showed real promise with a single stage of 54.3

Saturday the 15th December will be the penultimate range of the Diggers and G James Cups over 500 yards and another round of the 2019 Club Championship but members vying for inclusion into the NSW F class team to WA next year will be absent in Sydney for practice.
