Bathurst Rifle Club Inc., 11th February 2023, F A Wilde Trophy 300 yards.

Saturday’s competition saw the start of the F A Wilde Trophy from 300 yards with a strong north westerly breeze that strengthened during the afternoon with swings coming from the west as the strength eased to make it difficult weather to gain good scores in. With a good roll up of club members and six visitors trying out long range shooting it was a busy day.

Target Rifle shooter Graeme Bright top scored in his class although found it challenging during his first stage with Ron Gibson following next with a good first stage result but unfortunately had some trouble holding steady during his second stage finishing a couple of points ahead of John Coghill who had similar results later in the day.

Most visitors brought along their sporting rifles to try out the Sporter Class in long range target shooting but Paul Latauru used the club rifle under guidance of Jeff Eppleston for his first experience of shooting and achieved great results to top score on the day with Gary Cafe next using a more sophisticated front rest. Dan Parker slowly got a handle on things during his first stage and had a great score for his second stage result to lead one point ahead of club member James Clarke who was not grouping shots as close as usual on the day. Phil Mahon assisted Sue Kearl and David Trudgett with both doing well in their first experience of target shooting along with Kelly Hannan who unfortunately only had time for one stage.

F Class shooter Col Howell showed again why he is the short range master scoring the days only possible for his first stage score then backing up with just two points lost during his second stage to lead the day by two points over Geoff Willis with Jeff Eppleston next after a slow start in his first stage and Graham Willis another point behind. Nick Webster led the next group by a point with Mal Wright and Phil Mahon separated by super centres. Dave Butler also only had time to complete one stage during the afternoon.

Recently several Bathurst Rifle Club members attended the State Championship competition Kings Prize Series with club member Ben Wright achieving outstanding results in the F Standard B Grade Class for the three days competition over distances from 300 to 800 metres.

The first day was a mixed result over the three ranges contested with Ben finishing in eleventh place and eight points off the leader but the next day saw a big improvement and more consistent scoring to finish in third place for the days aggregate and two points off the leader for the day lifting his position to eighth over the two days.

Shooting only two stages on the final day Ben kept the pressure up going clean to top score the first stage and following up with just one point lost on the final fifteen shot stage to top the range again and win the days aggregate by two points. This lifted Ben to finish just two points off the competition winner in second place, congratulations on a great effort and result to comeback from behind on day one.

Next week will be the second round of the F A Wilde Trophy from 500 yards.
