Bathurst Rifle Club Inc., 16th January 2021, I Hughes & R Northcott trophy 700 yards.

The I Hughes & R Northcott Trophies competition was held at 700 yards on Saturday afternoon in some of the most challenging shooting conditions with a mostly strong west to south westerly breeze that varied rapidly and continually in strength and direction throughout the competition. With the sad passing of long time club member, Life Member and a great club supporter Roger Northcott during the week it was fitting that competition for the trophy with his name be competed for in the same week and I am sure he would have been amused watching from his vehicle as he did in the later years, as the shooters struggled without success to gain a reasonable score in the difficult conditions competing for his trophy.

In Target Rifle Class Graeme Bright may have claimed one magpie three in his first stage but had a great second stage score to finish four points ahead of Steve Williams who managed to stay clear of the three ring with Dennis Lavelle next a further five points down leading the group who strayed outside the inner four ring too often. Gordon Shepherd and John Coghill finished next up a further seven points away with Ron Gibson tailing the field.

F Class shooters suffered in the conditions much the same with super centres being scarce although Geoff Willis managed to get his shots away quick enough in his second stage to somewhat beat the changing conditions ensuring a nine point lead over Jeff Eppleston with Graham Willis a further five points down and the only F Class shooter not to gain a magpie three during the afternoon. Visitor Luke Harris finished three points away next down and one point in front of Phil Mahon who only scored inside the six ring on two occasions with both in the super centre. Oskar Berryman did well to be only two points further away in those conditions also claiming two super centres.

The I Hughes Trophy was won by Geoff Willis with Graeme Bright runner up and the R Northcott Trophy was won by Dennis Lavelle with John Coghill runner up. Next week we will commence competition for the Secretary’s Trophy at 800 yards. Another round of the Treasurers Trophy was conducted on Saturday with Gordon Shepherd narrowly taking the day over Steve Williams.
