Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 18th Aug 2018, W & J Brown Shield, 800yards

If last weeks’ shoot was described as brutal Saturdays wind was just as rough, but when you add sunny patches interspersed with very poor light, periods of rain which all but obliterated the target, an extra 100 yards, a bitterly cold wind and a 15 shot match it was a disaster waiting to happen.

But surprisingly it was only the two B grade target rifle shooters Dennis Lavelle and John Coghill who found difficulty with the conditions. As angry as the day turned out there were surprisingly good result for most of the competitors with the 15 shot match producing some excellent scores.

Steve Williams and Gordon Shepherd were right up with the condition changes, both wind and light, with scores of 49.03 and 48.02 whilst Graeme Bright finished an untidy stage with a magpie three/ bulls eye / inner four for a 44.0. Lavelle kept away from the outers but had a good number of inners but Coghill collected outer twos in abundance to add to magpie threes and inner fours.

Geoff Willis led out the F Class group with a very good 56.4 to put the pressure on Colin Howell (54.1) who has been top dog of late, and Nick Webster who was not far behind with 52.2

The 15 shot match saw a number of changes to wind, rain and light which threatened to derail the shoot. However with a long layoff coming up due to motor racing those on the mound decided to persevere and for some the magpies and outers multiplied in an alarming fashion. Coghill shot through a heavy rain squall and couldn’t make half the required score whilst Lavelle was one point off halfway. The remainder of the TR shooters relished the longer 15 shot stage and put some excellent scores on the target.

Williams with a one point lead laid down a 73/75 whilst Bright shot 72/75 but it was Shepherd with a big 8 centre count who came over the top of  both to take out the Cock of the Walk by 3 centre bulls eyes. Willis increased his lead over his two competitors in F class to a 5 shot margin shooting 6 super centres.

The W & J Brown Shield concludes next week and the format returns to 2 X 10 shot matches for the 2nd 900 yard championship range.
