Bathurst Rifle Club Inc., 20th February 2021, Captains Trophy Day

An early start for the Captains Trophy handicap competition and the magnificent weather saw a great rollup of shooters on Saturday starting at 500 yards with very little breeze and a readable mirage for most of the day although the occasional direction changes were to cause some points loss later in the afternoon.

F Class shooter Col Howell was the only one to capitalise on the conditions at 500 yards scoring a possible 60.5 with Jeff Eppleston only dropping one point and the rest of the field separated by just a few points. Steve Williams fared best of the Target Rifle shooters at 500 yards with the loss of one point.

Moving back to 600 yards with a quick change of the electronic target face F Class shooter Auskir Berryman showed his interest in the prize topping the field with a loss of only two points but it was still anyone’s day with five shooters tied on score and three points separating the group. In target Rifle class Steve Williams again led by one point to break for lunch with a two point lead.

After a tasty barbeque venison lunch for many of the shooters targets were changed and shooting recommenced at 800 yards with conditions getting a little trickier at times. F Class shooters Graham Willis, Jeff Eppleston and Ben Wright all dropped only one point each setting a goal too hard for those that followed although Auskir Berryman followed closely, holes were appearing in the plans of some who do not favour the longer ranges. Graeme Bright soon set a goal for the Target Rifle shooters at 800 yards with a great 50.6 possible to catch up on his short range scores.

Finally back to 900 yards and the F Class shooters were generally keeping a tight group with Phil Mahon and Geoff Willis narrowly top scoring the range. Steve Williams again led the pack in Target Rifle with Graham Bright right on his heels as the rest of the group showed not enough interest in the prize. There would be no clear winner till the numbers had been crunched back at the club house.

Congratulations to the winners: Auskir Berryman who managed to take the prize in F Class despite dropping a few extra points on the last range with Ben Wright a close runner up. Consistent shooting by Steve Williams awarded him the prize in Target Rifle by a narrow margin over Graeme Bright who tried very hard to keep his prize.

There will be no shooting next Saturday 27th February then we plan to return for the third round of the F A Wilde Trophy on Saturday 6th March from 600 yards.
