Bathurst Rifle Club Inc., 23rd February 2019. 800yds. J. Wilde Memorial Trophy & K. Redding 8/900yds.

Bathurst Rifle Club conducted the second round of the J. Wilde Memorial Trophy and the first stage of the K. Redding over 800/900 yards last Saturday. There was some relief from the hot sun but from before the start of shooting the wind was showing moderate strength mostly from the east to south easterly direction with gusting. This is not the preferred direction as the wind swirls down over the treetops on the east of the range. The drops in strength or sudden change in direction were to be hard to keep up with throughout the afternoon with only brief periods of steadiness to the condition.

Gordon Shepherd and Steve Williams were the first of the target rifle shooters to take on the weather doing well dropping only one point each in their first stage. Dennis Lavelle and Graham Bright each only two points down on the first stage. Ron Gibson had a bit more of a challenge for a decent score with the lateral dispersion robbing him of nine points for his first stage. Lavelle and Bright did well to repeat their efforts for the second stage, Gibson also saw an improvement losing three less points. Shepherd and Williams’ shots getting pushed about on the target to lose another four points each in the second stage.

Most of the scope shooters were not to have such a good time of it, dropping more points than they would like to in the first stage with the exception of Colin Howell who held steady and powered through the difficult conditions to drop only two points in his first stage. New shooter Luke Engle encountered difficult conditions along with a change to a different calibre rifle for a larger group than he has shown recently for both stages. Phil Mahon showed just what he is capable of with a decent rifle even in difficult conditions recording what may be his best ever stage with a 59.4 for the top F class stage for the day. Jeff Eppleston and Geoff Willis managed to lift their game a little for the second stage but not enough to catch the leaders.

Colin Howell finished strong enough to take the F class COW with Phil Mahon a point behind. Graham Bright was steady to win the target rifle COW by three centre bulls from Dennis Lavelle.

Next Saturday will be 900 yards Championship shoot and the final of the J. Wilde Memorial Trophy & K. Redding 8/900yds.
