Weekly Review 26/01/2019

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 26th January 2019, Hon. R L Gilmour Cup, 500yards.

Another quiet Saturday, wind wise, but the searing heat left its mark on shooters and despite two excellent stages from F–class competitors Grahame Willis and new comer Luke Engle scores were generally mid range at the best.

In the first stage of Target Rifle there were only two points separating all four shooters. Gordon Shepherd as you would expect being the only A grader on the mound led with a 47.04 but only by the skinny margin of one point from Dennis Lavelle and John Coghill who shot 46.04 and 46.02 respectively. Ron Gibson had a run of 3 inner fours and finished with another to record a 45.02.

In the second stage Lavelle topped the Target rifle score card with a 48.02 and this was enough to win the B grade Cock of the Walk from Gibson, whose improvement was only minimal, and Coghill who dropped three points in his last two shots. Shepherd was just able to save face beating Lavelle by one centre bull’s eye with a 47.03 finish

F class was as expected, a Willis victory with him carrying the can for absent A graders, taking out the CoW with 114.5, and just missing the possible with a second stage 59.3. Nick Webster looked about to cause an upset when he led Willis by two points after the first stage and was just one point down after seven shots, but a mini meltdown saw him drop 5 points in his last three shots.

Luke Harris is about to return to his home club Hornsby RC after a relaxing but hot summer stint and had his best shoot of the season. Luke Engle looks to be a hot prospect and after only his second go at target rifle shooting he almost cost the club a “first possible spoon”. Barring a bulleye 5, which even the coach missed, it would have been one of the fastest first possibles ever.

Bathurst shooters are putting in good performances at the Festival of Sydney Prize shoot at Malabar in Sydney with Steve Williams sitting eighth on the Target Rifle leaders board at the end of day one and our International F-class representatives Geoff Willis and Jeff Eppleston leading the FTR division running first and third respectively.

The next shoot on the Bathurst Rifle Range, on the 9th February, will be the sixth 600 yard Championship range and the final range of the Gilmour Cup.
