Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 26th May 2018, Secretary’s Trophy, 900yards

The 2017-18 Club Championship concluded on an almost perfect autumn day with Nick Cock and Geoff Willis being crowned Club Champion Target Rifle and Club Champion F-Class. These awards completed a great year for the pair who have excelled in local, state and international events. Whilst the 900 yard range was quite benign, particularly since it was so close to the winter doldrums, scores were reasonably good with most shooting on or close to their handicaps.

Cock, who is relocating to the NSW central coast was having one of his final club shoots on the Bathurst Range and went out with a top scoring 98.12 to put icing on the cake. Willis also excelled with 116.5 (for a 100% handicap score) to win the F class Cock of the Walk.

Remarkably there were no possibles but Geoff Willis with a 59.4 first stage and Cock with 49.05 and 49.07 gave the target a fright. Graeme Bright also shot well but with two inner fours in each stage found Cock too good. Dennis Lavelle after a long layoff has come back well scoring in the 90’s in there of his four comeback shoots.

Apart from Geoff Willis the remaining F Class shooters were closely bunched with Jeff Eppleston, fighting back from a poor first stage 52.2 to grab second spot with a good 58.1 second. Grahame Willis (109.3), Colin Howell (107.4) and Nick Webster (109.3) all had moderate scores with Webster using a borrowed rifle when he found his scope did not have enough elevation adjustment to shoot the 900 yard range.

Winners of trophies held over the months of April and May were G Shepherd (L Williams Cup and I Hughes Trophy), D Lavelle (Roger Northcott Trophy and Secretary’s Trophy) and Ron Gibson (Captains Trophy).

The 800 yard range of the Secretary’s Trophy has been cancelled, replaced by a 300 yard practice and target calibration day on June 2nd. Target calibration will also be a factor on Tuesday morning the 5th June.
