Weekly Review 29/06/2019

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc., 29th June 2019. 700yds. C R Kelly Cup.

Saturday’s sunshine brought a good number of shooters out to play and with a couple of visitors again trying out it was quite busy for the afternoon. A light to moderate breeze persisted most of the day swinging from a north westerly through to slightly from the north east on some occasions to reverse the direction of mirage. All the while the strength continually varied up and down from approximately 5kph to 16 kph contributing to a greater than normal vertical dispersion of shots at times as well as the usual horizontal caused by drops in strength and angle changes. Although this made for one of the most difficult wind reading days seen at the range for some time a couple of shooters managed to get through without suffering the lost points that most did.

In TR class Graeme Bright got to work like it was any other sunny day at the range only dropping four points for the day to easily take the days honours from Gordon Shepherd who had a score more in keeping with the conditions finishing eight points behind. Dennis Lavelle must have encountered some of the worst of it finding it hard to assemble any sort of a group in his first stage to end up a further eight points off the lead.

F Class shooters appeared to get carved up worse than the TR shooters with the exception of current club champion Graham Willis who managed to keep all but two shots inside the centre bull in his first stage to claim a great start that would prove impossible to catch. Next best was Jeff Eppleston who was perhaps the most consistent of the rest finishing seven points off the lead. Geoff Willis finished two points further back as he used up several batches of older ammunition with Ben Wright another two points back although he held good elevation for the first stage but suffered from the variable conditions. Phil Mahon was another point down from the lead but given the conditions and lack of range time lately did reasonably well with the rest of the field suffering worst in the tough conditions.

Visitors Hayden Booth and Michael Phillips again tried out the club F Class rifle and did quite well for the day with Hayden finishing up amongst some of the more experienced shooters.

Next week will be at 800 yards for the second round of the CR Kelly Cup.
