Weekly Review 31/07/2021

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc., 31st July 2021, Gilmour Cup 300 Yards.

Saturday saw the start of competition for the historic Gilmour Cup presented in 1910 by R L Gilmour Esq. and with a much improved temperature and weather during the afternoon compared to the previous week most club members came along to enjoy shooting. A predominately Northerly breeze which often swung slightly to the northwest or sometimes almost swung to the east as it picked up in strength kept shooters watching the conditions and scores a little lower.

Target rifle shooter Gordon Shepherd got straight to work scoring the only possible of the day in his first stage and take the days honours over Steve Williams by three centre bulls with Steve dropping just one point during each stage. Ron Gibson may not have expected to score as well as he did but with a great second stage score he finished just two points behind the leaders and six points ahead of Graeme Bright who seems to be struggling with a change of ammunition. Dennis Lavelle made up points with a much improved second stage to finish the day another two points behind ahead of John Coghill who had no luck with the conditions either stage. Charlie Bennett continues to work on setting up his gear and managed to score four centre bulls during the day’s competition.

F Class shooter Graham Willis led the way with consistent scoring for the day dropping two points and scoring four super centres for each stage followed by Nick Webster two points away who lost several points during his first stage but chased the lead hard later on gaining the day’s top stage score with Phil Mahon right on his heals finishing just one more point down with some good scoring for the day. Jeff Eppleston used a hunting rifle for the day with reasonable results to finish a further two points down followed closely by new shooter Khoby West-Kennett who shoots remarkably well with the club rifle, while Mal Wright finished another point down with Geoff Willis and Col Howell tailing the field. New shooter Alex Irvine also came along to try the sport of long range target shooting.

Over the previous weeks the Diggers & G James Cup competitions were finalised after the cancellation of the final round due to weather with Steve Williams winner of the G James Cup and Col Howell runner up. The Diggers Cup was also won by Steve Williams with Charlie Bennett runner up and the Diggers F Class medal was won by Col Howell with Geoff Willis runner up. The W Northcott Memorial Trophy was also competed for at 700 yards in some very cold and miserable conditions with just half the normal field of shooters and was won by Col Howell with Steve Williams runner up. Congratulations to all the winners and congratulations for scoring their first possible recently to Nick Webster scoring a 60.6 at 500 yards and Phil Mahon scoring a 60.4 also at 500 yards..

Next week will be an early start to the day at 800 yards in the morning and 900 yards after lunch competing for the Rutherford Memorial and T W Willman Trophy.
