Weekly Review 10/11/2018

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 10th November 2018, Diggers and G James Cups, 500yards.

A warm sunny Saturday afternoon was just to order for shooters at the first of the Championship ranges after an eight week break. Some good scores were achieved, none better than those by Steve Williams who honed in on the centre bull’s eye almost from the first shot, converting all four sighters, three of which were centre bull’s eyes.

Williams rarely looked like missing as he achieved the first double possible of the season and added a further 7 centre bull’s eyes to the three he had already pocketed. John Coghill surprisingly led the chasing bunch with a 48.04 from Graeme Bright on 47.05, closely followed by Gordon Shepherd with 47.03. Shepherd is multi-tasking by running his new barrel in whilst trying to compete in the competition.

The second stage was much better for Bright who crafted a very tight possible with another 5 centres for a total of ten to give him second place from Shepherd who had a couple of wobbles having to settle for 48.01.

Coghill got a bit excited after his good first stage and tried to pull the trigger half way through his second stage before cocking the bolt, the consequent confusion led to a run of 4 inner fours before he gathered his wits to finish with a 46.02. Dennis Lavelle’s hand operations have taken longer to overcome and his consistency has suffered with only one solid stage in the last four to show for his efforts. Coghill grabbed the advantage to win the B grade COW.

With such mild conditions it was surprising that there were not better scores from the F class contingent. As it turned out however Colin Howells’ first stage 59.06 was the highest stage of the day and the determining factor in his COW win. Grahame Willis had a great chance to usurp Howell but two dropped points late in his second stage brought him undone.

Geoff Willis was not a happy camper as he loudly talked his way through a poor 54.2 first stage and was unable to compensate for those lost shots in his second stage 57.3. Nick Webster is continuing his development and refining his reloading techniques with a fair 108.3.

The rifle range is closed next week 17th November for the running of Drive Bathurst, open on 24th November for a 600 yard Championship shoot, and closed again on 1st December for the Sea of Sound festival.
