Bathurst Rifle Club Inc., 11th July 2020, 500 yards Diggers & G James Cups.

Saturday again saw a great attendance of shooters for the fifth stage of the diggers & G James Cups from 500 yards. A somewhat steady westerly breeze still managed to catch those not wary enough but the cool and overcast weather made for very good sighting with a rare lack of visible mirage allowing many shooters to score above their average.

The standout Target Rifle shooter was again Graeme Bright leading the day with only one point lost while scoring ten centre bulls and a second stage possible to finish two points ahead of Steve Williams with eight centre bulls and a second stage possible. Gordon Shepherd was also two points behind the lead with three centre bulls and managed ten bulls’ eyes in a row for his second stage without touching the centre bull line. Next up Ron Gibson had a great result finishing only one point behind and claiming six centre bulls to be three points ahead of Dennis Lavelle who fell behind in the conditions later in the day with John Coghill another point down although holding great elevation for most of his second stage.

F Class shooters were left scratching their heads after Jeff Eppleston defied the odds shooting with lightweight bullets to score an impressive double possible including thirteen super centres for the day with Geoff Willis next up a further four points away with a slow start to his second stage. Then another two points further down was a group of three shooters led by Nick Webster then Ben Wright followed by Graham Willis all separated by only one super centre each. Col Howell finished two points behind the group although he also scored thirteen super centres for the day, unfortunately an adjustment caused a break in concentration resulting in a shot to the next target and a loss of six points which surely cost him second place for the day. Phil Mahon rounded out the pack one more point down but even a big recovery in the second stage could not make up the lost points of his first stage apparently due to some loose locking screws.

Next Saturday 18th July will be another Club Championship round from 600 yards and the final round of the Diggers & G James Cups.
