Bathurst Rifle Club Inc., 13th February 2021, F A Wilde Trophy 500 yards.

After the rain cleared early Saturday morning we were greeted with a mostly warm and sunny afternoon for the second round of the F A Wilde Trophy from 500 yards. The light north westerly breeze was predictable at times for a short period early in the afternoon but soon the observed mirage became useful in trying to keep up with the consistently changing direction and strength which became generally difficult to read.

The close competition continued in Target Rifle class with Steve Williams not missing a shot while claiming eight centre bulls in his first stage to take the days honours by just two centre bulls ahead of Graeme Bright. Gordon Shepherd followed four points away with a bad start to his first stage but managed to stay one point ahead of Dennis Lavelle for each stage on the day with John Coghill having some equipment issues that possibly caused a lack of the concentration needed to pull good shots.

In F Class Geoff Willis capitalised on conditions during his first stage to gain a few points advantage allowing him to hold onto top spot with new shooter Khoby showing he can pull good shots to finish just six super centres away. Nick Webster had a great run holding good elevation in the conditions scoring seven super centres and finishing only two points further down with Jeff Eppleston one point behind and three points ahead of Col Howell and Phil Mahon who were only separated by one super centre. Auskir Berryman followed the field by another four points appearing to have trouble holding a tight group in the changing conditions.

Next week it is planned to shoot four stages over four ranges from 500 yards to 900 yards with a break for lunch after the second stage. The third round of the F A Wilde Trophy is planned for Saturday 6th March from 600 yards. Another round of the Secretary’s Trophy was also held on Saturday with the day’s handicap winner Nick Webster (50) and runner up Auskir Berryman (49.84).
