Bathurst Rifle Club Inc., 31st August 2019. 600yds. W & J Brown Trophy.

After the early morning wind disappeared shortly before the start of shooting on Saturday some shooters may have thought they were in for easy shooting conditions but as usual Mother Nature gave us an interesting afternoon that varied from the flags hanging down the poles to a light but unpredictable South Easterly breeze. Few shooters were lucky enough to go through with their scores appearing relatively unaffected while others wondered where the odd wide shot came come from.

Steve Williams dominated TR Class dropping only two points for the day while scoring the only possible for his second stage and amassing twelve centre bulls as well. Hayden Booth continued to show great promise dropping two more points and also scoring ten centre bulls. Next best for the day with two points further down was Graeme Bright who had a shaky start to his second stage to just keep ahead of Gordon Shepherd by two centre bulls with Dennis Lavelle finishing another point down. Visiting shooter Allan Buckley competed in TR Optical Class dropping six points for the day.

Short range master Col Howell came along to show the F Class group how to do it dropping only two points for the day with next best Graham Willis five points further down and lamenting over the spread of his shots. Leanne Tobin came along for another try out and had a mixed bag for the first stage using the club small calibre rifle but finished much stronger with a 308W calibre rifle later in the day while also totalling ten super centres. Visitor Aaron Druitt finished next with consistent scoring for the day ahead of Phil Mahon who let his grouping get a bit too big in the second stage. Eloise Weekes tried out again and also did much better using a 308W rifle for her second stage even though it is not ideal to shoot a right handed rifle from left hand position. Geoff Willis and Nick Webster will both have to investigate why they had much trouble getting their groups centred.

The W & J Brown Consolation Trophy was won by Phil Mahon.

Next week we will be back to the W & J Brown Shield from 700 yards. We will also be shooting on the 14th September for what may be a practise and coaching day.

                                                                                                                                  by Geoff Willis
