Bathurst Rifle Club Inc., 2nd December 2023, NSWRA Medal Competition Day

The NSWRA Medal competition was held on Saturday commencing in the morning with a stage from 500 yards followed by the second stage from 600 yards. There was a break for lunch then the third stage was from 800 yards followed by the final at 900 yards. Shooters had to contend with a variable north westerly breeze that became more difficult as the day progressed. Fourteen shooters competed with two Target Rifle, two Sporter Class, seven F Standard, and three in F Open.

At the 500 yards range Graeme Bright (TR), Dennis Lavelle (Sporter) and Graham Willis (F Standard) all claimed a possible to lead in their categories with Garry Cafe leading in (F Open). James Clarke (Sporter) and Auskir Berryman (F Standard) were just one point away in their class. The 600 yards range proved more difficult for most shooters with Graeme Bright (TR) still leading, Auskir Berryman (FS) put in another good result but most FS shooters were holding to their handicaps. In Sporter class Dennis Lavelle held on to the handicapped lead. In F Open Garry Cafe shot well to hold the lead.

Returning after lunch to the 800 yards stage shooters scores showed the tricky wind had not improved with Graeme Bright (TR) still holding the lead, Dennis Lavelle (Sporter) continued to hold a narrow lead on handicap, Jeff Eppleston (FS) doing best with Dave Butler (FS) also doing well in the conditions to move up a point in the field, with Garry Cafe (FO) also holding the lead. Moving back to 900 yards saw Col Howell (FS) retire and John Coghill (TR) retire for the day. Graeme Bright held on to claim the TR medal, James Clarke (Sporter) managed to score a possible in the tough conditions giving him a one point lead to claim the medal, Dave Butler (FS) held on well in the conditions picking up another point over Auskir Berryman to claim the medal in a field with just four points separation in the days results. Geoff Willis (FO) came home strong to narrowly claim the medal over Garry Cafe by one point.
